Designed to replace outdated facilities in the original doctor’s house, the new medical centre for Balsall Common provides accommodation for GPs, nurses, health visitors and midwives.

Situated in the original green belt, the building and surrounding landscape has been carefully designed to respect the location and local environment. The new medical centre was designed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards by incorporating systems such as air source heat pumps, rainwater recycling, and sustainable drainage systems to create a building with low energy consumption to withstand future demands on sustainibility.

Approach & Methodology

The new Primary Care Health Centre at Hall Meadow Road, Balsall Common allows Doctors and patients to enjoy the new modern facilities,  replacing their original outdated premises in the village centre.

Undertaken for Ashley House plc, Gould Singleton were involved from the outset with identifying appropriate sites in Balsall Common and preparing feasibility studies and layouts during the initial consultation process. Patient Group consultation meetings were held and surveys of users and participants were used to develop the principles behind the brief.

Detailed room layouts and configurations were carefully coordinated by Gould Singleton in conjunction with the end users. Whilst appearing as one building, the design carefully incorporates separate accesses for the GP surgery patients and staff, the PCT (CCG) clinic and office facilities, a retail pharmacy and an NHS dental suite with out of hours use.

Collaborative
Approach

Meeting with patient groups, residents, PCT (CCG) and end users, Gould Singleton were able to react and provide a design that encompassed the desires and wishes of the local patients within the umbrella of a Third Party Developer led scheme.

Early consultation with the planning and highways authorities identified key design issues and enabled the final design at planning stage to receive approval from Solihull MBC.

Novated to the Contractor Wildgoose Construction, Gould Singleton provided detailed design and technical services and advice through to completion and handover.
